Introdution:
Jianbo Gao received his Ph.D from the Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2000. He was an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida from July 2002 to May 2009. He has been working simultaneously in a number of fields, including bioengineering, networking, signal processing, and nano- and fault-tolerant computation. He is the creator of numerous novel nonlinear signal processing methods, which have been applied to fields as diverse as physics, geophysics, physiology, economics, and engineering.
Since May 2009, he has been running a startup company near Purdue University, focusing on applying many of his unique techniques to signal/image processing in biomedical engineering, geophysics, remote sensing, networking, and finance. He was an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and Signal Processing, and has authored almost 60 peer-reviewed journal papers, with SCI citations near 700 times. His recent book, "Multiscale Analysis of Complex Time Series: Integration of Chaos and Random Fractal Theory, and Beyond",is the first book in the field, and has been highly praised by famous scientists including Prof. Alexandre Chorin at UC, Berkeley and Prof. Yuan-Chen Fung at UC, San Diego.

Abstract:
Massively-distributed complex engineering systems are evolving rapidly, and posing challenging problems both in modeling their dynamics and behavior and in engineering such systems with targeted functionalities.Example systems include the Internet and the ubiquitous communication networking infrastructure, large networks of sensors, Peer-To-Peer networking and computing, and biological systems, which are being pursued as future models for complex computing engines. In this talk,I will first present a number of scenarios involving existing systems, where conventional modeling and design techniques do not hold. I will then introduce a set of tools involving chaos and multifractals, and demonstrate how these tools can effectively model and characterize complicated engineering problems. Finally, I describe a unified theory for multiscale analysis of complex data. The problems to be discussed in this talk include multiscale modeling of sea clutter radar returns, multiscale modeling of telecommunications network traffic, multiscale gene-finder,and multiscale analysis of complex physiological data. A number of promising future research directions will also be discussed.
