演講 "Narrative Medicie" Dr. Richard Frankel 10/14 11:00-12:00 醫學院2樓第4講堂

Speaker: Dr. Richard M. Frankel, PhD
Professor, Indiana University

Topic: Narrative Medicine
“Narrative medicine is a term used to describe an individual, community and organizational approach to learning and practicing medicine. It begins with the idea that human beings “encode” much of their experience in narratives, and that narrative is a primary means of conveying what it means to become a physician and practice medicine. Narrative is also the primary means by which patients communicate what is wrong with them and why they seek the attention of a physician. The patient’s story is sometimes referred to as the “narrative thread,” and it is this thread that physicians must elicit in order to fully understand and appreciate not only the disease that a patient may have but also their illness, that is, their social and psychological response to disease. Narrative medicine, then, is both a contemporary concept in education and patient care and also an age old tradition that human beings have relied upon to communicate with one another for thousands of years.”
